General introduction of processes and used equipments

Mixing:-

It is a process in which two are more than two components are mixed in such a way that particles are adjacent to each other.

It is most common pharmaceutical operation used in all kinds of pharmaceutical industries.

Mixing can be done of:

  • Liquid and liquid
  • Solid and solids
  • Solid and liquids
  • Gases and liquids

Equipments used in mixing process:-

1. Silverson homogenizer

2. V-type mixer

Silverson homogenizer:-

  • It is mostly used for mixing of suspension, emulsion and syrups.
  • It has many parts:
  1. Electric motor
  2. Shaft
  3. Stand
  4. Blades
  5. Head and fine mash.

Principal:-

It works on the principle of shear(cutting due to high speed).

Working:-

  • Homogenizer is placed into the container containing emulsion.
  • Speed of motor depends upon the product and quantity of sample.
  • Through fine mesh, globules reach to blades.
  • These blades out the large globule into smaller one.

V-type mixer:-

  • It is used for large scale mixing of powders.
  • Apparatus is made up of stainless steel.
  • It has following parts:
  1. V shaped container
  2. Inlet
  3. Outlet
  4. Stand
  5. Shaft
  6. Motor

Principal:-

  • It works on the principle of tumbling motion.

Working:-

  • Different powders are placed in v- shape container from inlet.
  • As blender rotates, material undergoes tumbling motion.
  • After mixing ,material is collected in the bottom of V.
  • Efficiency of mixer depends upon the speed of rotation.
